Numbness, Diabetes and Carpal Tunnel

numbnessNumbness is, most simply, a loss of sensation or feeling in a part of your body. Numbness is usually caused by irritation or compression of a branch of nerves either where they exit the spine or in your extremities. Peripheral nerves are nerves that have exited your spine. Damage to your peripheral nerves is called peripheral neuropathy. Diseases affecting the peripheral nerves, such as diabetes, also can cause numbness. Typically, numbness is similar to having your leg fall asleep. It can be in one small spot or it can cover a large area depending on what nerves, and how many of them, are involved. An example of how numbness works is this: imagine you were carrying a heavy bag or purse and your arm falls asleep. What is actually happening is you are putting pressure on the nerves going to your hand. This pressure, in essence, chokes off the messages that are sent to the brain, causing a decrease in your body's awareness of your hand. Carpal tunnel is another example of this phenomenon. In carpal tunnel, the nerves going to your fingers and hand are compressed. The nerves can be compressed at different locations from your neck to your hand.

In order for us to determine if we can treat your numbness we must first diagnose the root cause of your numbness. We do this by taking a detailed history, taking x-rays, and by performing an extensive neurological exam. If we determine your numbness is caused by the nerves being entrapped we find where it is being entrapped and treat that area. If we determine your numbness is not caused by nerve entrapment we will refer you to the proper specialist.

Our chiropractic treatments for numbness focus on taking pressure off the nerve or nerves that are being entrapped. Many times, the cause of the numbness is caused by spinal misalignments. We remove these spinal misalignments by using the chiropractic adjustment. Some of the other tools we have to use are soft tissue therapies, acupuncture, and nutritional supplements.

Neck /Shoulder Pain and Degeneration of the Cervical Spine

Your neck, also called the cervical spine , begins at the base of the skull and contains seven bones called vertebrae. Incredibly, the cervical spine supports the full weight of your head, which is on average about 12 pounds. Your neck has the ability to move your head in nearly every direction. While this freedom of movement makes life easier, it also makes the neck very susceptible to injury. Many of the normal things we do everyday push our necks towards injury including extended sitting, repetitive movement, accidents, falls, blows to the body or head, and everyday wear and tear. There are many causes of neck pain. Among the most common causes are whiplash, degeneration of the cervical spine, poor posture, stress, and diet.

neck-painLucky for you, our clinic is equipped to address all of these causes of neck pain! Whiplash is most commonly the result of an auto accident. This occurs when there is a sudden movement of the head or neck in any direction which results in a rebound in the opposite direction. Chiropractic care addresses the damage done to the soft tissues. It also addresses any spinal misalignments that may have resulted from the whiplash. Degeneration is preventable, but if you already have degeneration, chiropractic care is an excellent tool for managing the symptoms. Chiropractic care can even slow degeneration down or stop the process altogether. Our clinic specializes in restoring spinal curves and posture. We can address stress on the neck through the chiropractic adjustment as well as using nutritional supplementation for a better stress response.

During your visit we will perform exams to locate the source of your pain and will ask you questions about your current symptoms and remedies you may have already tried.

We will also perform physical and neurological exams. In the physical exam, we will observe your posture, range of motion, and physical condition. During the neurological exam we will test your reflexes, muscle strength, other nerve changes. We will also perform an x-ray which can show narrowed disc space, fractures, bone spurs, or arthritis.

Our primary treatment tool will be the chiropractic adjustment, specifically the neck adjustment. This is a precise procedure applied with light force to the joints of the neck. This is used to improve overall motion and to improve structure in the neck. The typically results in a reduction of pain, soreness, and stiffness; as well as an increased ability to move the neck. Acupuncture is another tool that we use in our clinic which is also highly effective.

A review of scientific literature found evidence that patients with chronic neck pain who had enrolled in clinical trials reported significant improvement following the chiropractic adjustment. In a review published in JMPT, researchers reviewed nine previously published trials and found that patients with chronic neck pain showed significant pain-level improvements following spinal manipulation. All groups in the studies showed positive changes that lasted up to 12 weeks post-treatment.

Headaches, Migraines and Neck Dysfuction

What do you do when a debilitating headache or migraine hits? Do you turn the lights off and lie down? Just suffer through it? Pop a couple pills and hope it goes away? Well, if you are looking for long lasting, drug free relief from headaches, you have come to the right place.

migraine-headacheNinety-five percent of headaches are primary headaches, such as tension, migraine, or cluster headaches. These types of headaches are not caused by disease. Instead, they are caused by physical, chemical, or emotional stress on your body. The majority of headaches stem from neck dysfunction. Today, more than ever, we are more prone to neck dysfunction and headaches because Americans are more sedentary than ever. We spend more hours in a fixed position. Our posture deteriorates and this leads to joint irritation, muscle tension in the neck, upper back, and scalp, ultimately causing your head to ache.

Now we know what causes headaches and migraines, but how can chiropractic help? That's a great question. The Health Path clinic focuses on restoring proper posture and focuses on restoring the proper neck curve. Remember the majority of headaches stem from neck dysfunction? Not convinced yet? A report released in 2001 by researchers at Duke University found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headaches than a commonly prescribed medication. In 1995, a study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches and that those who ceased chiropractic treatment after four weeks experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in contrast with those patients who received a commonly prescribed medication.

By addressing neck dysfunction we are actually addressing the cause of your headache; whereas that pill you take is merely dulling your perception of the headache. In some cases, that pill may actually be contributing to the problem. With the chiropractic adjustment, cervical traction, exercise, relaxation techniques, and spinal molding, we are able to treat the root cause of most headaches. In addition to chiropractic, our clinic offers nutritional counseling and acupuncture for the treatment of headaches. Both acupuncture and proper nutritional supplementation have an outstanding record of successfully treating headaches.

Headaches are not normal and they should not be a normal part of your year, month, week, or even day. Come in today and see if we can get you on the path to a headache or migraine free life.

Back Pain

Low Back Pain & Ruptured Disks

Most people think of chiropractors as back doctors . Although we treat the entire body, we have an unsurpassed knowledge of the spine and back. 85% of Americans will experience back pain at some point in their lifetime and half of those people will have recurring back pain. To understand the significance of this we have to understand the significance of pain. Pain is your body's way of telling you there is something wrong and that you need to do something to fix it. When you burn your finger, the pain nerves in your finger send a message (PAIN!) to your brain that tells you to pull your finger away from whatever burned it. This happens for two reasons. First, it stops the burning from further injuring your finger. It also acts as a reminder to avoid that from happening again.

back-painBack pain is not always as simple. The back pain is telling you that you need to do something to fix whatever is causing the back pain. That is where it gets tricky. It is not always so obvious what is causing the back pain. Just like if you were to ignore pulling your finger off of whatever is burning it, if you ignore your back pain the body could sustain serious damage. Since it is not always clear what is causing your back pain, it is an excellent idea to seek out a back specialist who is highly trained in indentifying causes of back pain. It just so happens that our clinic specializes in identifying and treating a wide variety of causes of back pain!

There are many causes of back pain. Some of the causes of back pain include: sprained ligaments, strained muscles, ruptured disks, and irritated joints. While sports injuries or sports accidents can cause back pain, sometimes the simplest of movements for example, picking up a pencil from the floor can have painful results. This is usually due to physical stress in that area that eventually built up to the point where something as simple as bending over could trigger excruciating back pain. In addition, arthritis, poor posture, obesity, and psychological stress can cause or complicate back pain. Back pain can also directly result from disease of the internal organs, such as kidney stones, kidney infections, blood clots, or bone loss. As you can see, there is a vast array of causes of back pain, all of which we are trained to identify in this clinic.

Back pain is not just a condition that older people experience. Back pain can affect children as well. Since back pain recurs in 50% of people it is important to address it as soon as possible. An even better idea is to try and prevent back pain from ever happening. Some of the things you can do to prevent back pain from occurring are: maintain a healthy diet and weight, remain active—under the supervision of your doctor of chiropractic, avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest, warm up or stretch before exercising or other physical activities, such as gardening, maintain proper posture, wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes, sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to minimize any curve in your spine, lift with your knees, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting, work with your doctor of chiropractic to ensure that your computer workstation is ergonomically correct, and practice spinal hygiene. Spinal hygiene is similar to dental hygiene. It involves visiting a chiropractor periodically to ensure your back is both structurally and functionally in optimal shape.

The primary treatment at our office is chiropractic spinal adjustment. This is a safe and effective spine pain treatment. It reduces pain, decreases medication, and rapidly advances physical therapy. In fact, after an extensive study of all currently available care for low back problems, a federal government research organization called the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research recommended that low back pain sufferers choose the most conservative care first. And it recommended the chiropractic adjustment as the only safe and effective, drugless form of initial professional treatment for acute low back problems.

Our approach to treating back pain is gentle, safe, effective. At our clinic we will do everything possible to get you better so you can avoid taking unnecessary medications and undergoing unnecessary surgeries.

acupunctureAcupuncture is a natural therapy that is used to heal illness, prevent disease and improve well-being. Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine that is over 3000 years old. Acupuncture is performed by inserting tiny hair-thin needles into specific points on the body. Theses points are located on channels that run through the body called meridians. These meridians act as pathways for Qi (pronounced chee). Qi is defined as the flow of energy that sustains living things. Qi has a natural flow through the meridians of the body and when this natural flow is interrupted pain, sickness and disease occur.

In countries such as Japan and China, which make up about a 20% of the world's population, acupuncture has been established as a primary form of health care, where the acupuncturist's role is comparable to that of the physician.

Acupuncture is safe and effective for the young and the old. It is safe to use during pregnancy and commonly used to treat pregnancy aches and pains, and morning sickness. Acupuncture is used to treat the following conditions: headaches, migraines, neck pain, shoulder pain, low back pain, anxiety, depression, arthritis, insomnia, sinus problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, smoking addiction, obesity, weight control, motor vehicle injuries, sports injuries, stroke, TMJ, menstrual issues, and infertility.

Acupuncture is used in our clinic as an adjunct to the Chiropractic care. Together Chiropractic and Acupuncture have been shown to get great results. Prior to your first Acupuncture treatment we will take a history of the condition to be treated as well as perform a specialized exam. With this information we will create a customized treatment plan that will address your condition.

Typically with Acupuncture your pain will decrease or go away quickly, and after only a few treatments many patients experience lifelong results.
